4 Rules to Accessorizing Any Outfit

You may have picked a great outfit to look like the power and funky dresser that you are but it can all get messed up with the wrong accessory. On one hand, you can do wonders to an otherwise ordinary outfit with the right accessories.

Accessorizing, unfortunately, is not as easy as picking the first septum piercing jewelry 14g that caught your eye or a spiky silver necklace that sparkles in the night. Just like dressing up, there’s an art to accessorizing. There are rules to abide and then there are also rules worth breaking.

Getting the why right

There are many uses for accessories no matter your outfit. One of which is to bring more attention to your most flattering parts and less attention to your worst points. Accessories such as an elegant pair of gold earrings, for instance, add more sophistication to your usual work attire. A spiked bangle, on one hand, can change your look from casual to trendy perfect for a day out with friends.

To be able to pick the right accessories, you must start with the why. Because if you know the why, it will be easy to pick one from your massive collection that matches that of Little Mermaid’s trove of treasures.

Consider work-appropriate jewelry

It’s not all the time that you can wear a funky accessory to work. In fact, some workplace wouldn’t allow employees to wear facial jewelry other than a pair of earrings. But that doesn’t mean you can’t break the rules. How to hide a septum piercing if you really want an accessory for your septum? By getting a clip on septum ring instead. If your boss sees your ring and tells you to take it off, you can just unclip it. If he sees it and says nothing then you’re okay to wear it all day.

Harmonizing the pieces together

When choosing accessories such as shoes or handbags, the rule of thumb is to have some common element that meshes these items with your outfit and personality. In the jewelry department, when choosing a piece to match your outfit, think of how it will add value to the overall look. At the same time, each piece should be harmonized with your body frame or scale as well as facial features.

Don’t be afraid to experiment

While rules are rules and they serve a great purpose most times, it doesn’t mean breaking them is completely wrong. In fact, you might want to break a rule or two from time to time at least with respect to your jewelry choices. To stand out from the crowd and express yourself fully and unabashedly, you shouldn’t be ever afraid to experiment. If the rule says never mix silver and gold, you might want to experiment and see if mixing actually works for you.

Because accessorizing is an art, interpretation may differ from person to person. At the end of the day, the only person you should aim to please is yourself. Are you happy with your accessory choices? Are you feeling confident with your jewelry pieces? If you answer is yes to both questions then you’re on the right track.
